카페 영어가 식당 영어와 다른 건 내가 먼저 말해야 한다는 점입니다. 식당은 앉아 있으면 사람이 와서 물어봐 주지만, 카페는 카운터 앞에 서는 순간 What can I get you? 가 날아오고 그때부터 크기·온도·우유·먹고 갈지 를 연달아 정해야 해요. 한 번에 다 나오는 질문이 아니라 하나씩 오기 때문에, 짧은 대답을 여러 개 쥐고 있는 편이 긴 문장 하나보다 훨씬 낫습니다.
주문은 세 조각으로 나눠 생각하면 쉬워요 — 무엇을(A latte, please.) · 어떻게(Iced, with oat milk.) · 어디서(For here. / To go.). 한 문장에 다 넣으려다 막히는 경우가 많은데, 끊어서 말해도 전혀 이상하지 않습니다. 실제로 원어민도 그렇게 말해요.
